The Execution of Esther Blount uncovers state-sanctioned murder in Colonial America

In this true story, Esther Blount, a slave of James and Ann Blount of Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina, was put on trial, convicted and executed for attempting to poison Ann Blount in 1779. The alleged crime was considered an act of terrorism. There was no evidence to support the verdict and sentence. The suspected motive to steer Esther to the death penalty was to allow the Blounts to cash in on Esther's purported value by filing a compensation claim with the State of North Carolina. The evidence, held in a slave court consisting of a nine-judge panel that included slave owners and relatives of James and Ann Blount, was flimsy at best. The trial paved the way for Esther's execution and allow the Blounts to file their claim.

Shadows at Ballygroman doc examines incident that sparked a bloodbath during the Irish Civil war

During the uneasy truce between Ireland's war of independence against England and the subsequent civil war between the pro-treaty and anti-treaty Irish Republican Army and the people of the new Free State, a shot rang out in the dead of night on April 26, 1922, at Ballygroman in County Cork. Acting IRA Commander Michael O'Neill died on the roadway in front of the home of Thomas Henry Hornibrook and his son, Samuel. Hornibrook's son-in-law, the war hero Capt. Herbert Woods, fired the fatal shot. The killing touched off a series of reprisals that left 13 Protestants dead over 72 hours, including the Hornibrooks and Woods. The bodies of the three men at Ballygroman were never recovered. This story recounts those bloody three days and the impact it had on the people of West Cork.

Flying Goose Productions explores
combat photography history

The motion picture industry was still in its infancy when World War I broke out. The United States entered the war in 1917 and desperately needed motion picture cameramen to provide film footage of the United States Army's participation in the war. Hundreds of men were recruited in the early months of 1917 for training in the Signal Corps. Among the cameramen in Hollywood who joined the war as a cinematographer was the famed director Victor Fleming who would later go on to direct Gone with the Wind and the Wizard of Oz. These cameramen pioneered cinematography on the battlefield, risking their lives to bring images of the war to American movie theaters. They provided a template for future motion picture cameramen to film subsequent battles during World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars, and subsequent major conflicts worldwide.

SELIG: Hollywood's Flawed Pioneer educational doc to join film festival circuit

Selig: Hollywood's Flawed Pioneer will begin making the rounds on the film festival circuit this season.

The film chronicles the success and failures of William Selig's pioneering film studio, which developed the concept of documentaries, the cult of celebrity, the serial, which is now episodic television, and the factory assembly-line process of producing films to mass audiences.

Selig Polyscope was the leading film studio Edendale, California, but William Selig's failure to adapt to the quickly changing landscape of filmmaking in the 1910s and teens doomed his business. As the Jazz Age dawned and the flapper became the definition of fashion and glamour, Selig couldn't compete and by 1919 his studio had failed.

Flying Goose Productions second documentary, Laura Forster's Great War, is now available on Vimeo and YouTube. This short film, hosted by Rob Wagner, profiles Dr. Laura Forster. Forster was an Australian scientist, physician and surgeon renowned for her research in diseases. Coming from a military family, she had a sense of adventure and duty to her country and her adopted country of England. She volunteered to serve as a surgeon at the front lines when the First World War broke out in 1914, but the Royal Army Medical Corps refused to allow women surgeons in operating theaters near the front. Rather than submit to the RAMC's whims, she embarked on a nearly three-year journey to Belgium, France, the Caucasus, Turkey and Russia. She took charge of hospitals to provide critical care to soldiers and refugees alike. The strain of travel under harsh conditions would ultimately lead to her death in Russia in 1917.
